Civil Rights

Cuyamaca Library Celebrates the
50th Anniversary of the
1964 Civil Rights Act

President Lyndon Johnson signs the Civil Rights Act of 1964 into law.

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was signed to outlaw discrimination in places of public accommodation, education, employment, and housing on the basis of race, color, religion, or national origin. No longer could minorities be denied service simply based on the color of their skin.

Before the Civil Rights Act was signed; minority groups were
excluded from restaurants, theaters, parks, and other public places.

This month’s library display of  posters, books, and information are on
both floors of the library and focus on the struggles minorities have faced.
